Abstract

1,267,647. Grinding. NORTON CO. 17 July, 1970 [29 Oct., 1969], No. 34693/70. Heading B3D. [Also in Division C4] A process for grinding a metal reactive towards oxygen at the temperature of grinding comprises applying to the metal a rotating grinding-wheel consisting of abrasive grains of grit size of from 4 to 30 grit and a particulate inorganic filler material which is non-reactive at the temperature and pressure of the grinding and having a numerical average particle size of less than 75 microns, which is silicon carbide, aluminium oxide, fused zirconia-alumina, fused zirconia-spinel, boron nitride, boron carbide, tungsten carbide, sintered bauxite, sintered zirconia-alumina, calcium carbonate and magnesium carbonate, the wheel being bonded by a thermoset organic polymer. The metal may be a low-alloy or carbon steel, tool steel, file steel, structural steel, standard merchant steel, cast steel, cast iron, titanium and titanium alloys. The thermoset resin may be a phenol-formaldehyde condensation resin, an epoxy resin, an unsaturated polyester resin, a polyurethane resin, a polyimide resin, polybenzimidazole resin or a polysulphide resin. The abrasive may be aluminium oxide, silicon carbide, zirconia, fused zirconia-alumina, fused zirconia-spinel, sintered bauxite, sintered zirconia-alumina, and mixtures of these. The filler may be present in amount of 10-40% by volume.
