Abstract

1,267,517. Fibrillating films; void-containing films. ERNEST SCRAGG & SONS Ltd. 6 Oct., 1969 [10 Oct., 1968], No. 47979/69. Heading B5B. Filaments are produced by fibrillating, e.g. by stretching, a thermoplastics film which has longitudinal internal and external surface discontinuities. The film, which may have semicircular surface grooves and contain longitudinal circular channels is made, e.g. by injecting air internally during extrusion followed by passage through ribbed rollers. Beaded edges may be provided to assist in accurate positioning of the internal voids with respect to the ribs on the rollers. Tri- or four-lobed filaments may be formed, separately or mixed, depending on the relative positions of the ribs and channels. The film may be a multilayer formed by extrusion, the composite filaments so produced being self-crimping.
