Abstract

1,266,998. Heating and cooling buildings; heat pumps; heat exchangers. SINGER CO. 22 Oct., 1970 [28 Oct., 1969], No. 50160/70. Headings F4H, F4S and F4U. Apparatus for heating or cooling various zones in a building comprises a heat pump 16, Fig. 1, in each zone over which air is passed to be heated or cooled and through which water is circulated in a closed system 12, the water being selectively heated or cooled in a single storage vessel 18. The upper portion of the vessel has a tube type heat exchanger 32, Fig. 2, extending therethrough for countercurrent flow of the system water from an external aperture 44 to an internal aperture 48 relative to a flow of cooling medium, e.g. water flowing in a cooling loop 36 including a pump 38 and cooling tower 40. The system water passes from aperture 48 into the vessel wherein electric immersion heaters 34 are located which are selectively operated from a control panel 30. The heat pumps 16 each comprise a reversible refrigeration apparatus 54, Fig. 3, enclosed in a casing 56 through which the system water passes in heat exchange relationship with a heat exchange 58. The apparatus 54 includes a compressor 60, a 4-way reversing valve 62, a condenser/heat exchanger 64 having coils exposed to the air which circulates through a casing 56 by operation of a blower 66, a capillary restrictor tube 68 and a closed refrigerant circulating loop 70.
