Abstract
1,266,875. Coated particles. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 9 July, 1969 [6 Aug., 1968], No. 37526/68. Heading B2E. [Also in Division C3] Mouldable thermoplastic materials containing a reinforcing filler are obtained by depositing a solid thermoplastic material from a liquid medium onto the filler, separating from the liquid medium, granulating the reinforced material and drying. The liquid medium may be an aqueous emulsion. The thermoplastic material may comprise polymers and copolymers of vinyl chloride and vinylidene chloride, and copolymers of acrylonitrile and styrene, particularly those containing more than 50% of acrylonitrile. A third monomer may be present, such as maleimides and N-aryl maleimides. The polymer may be deposited on the filler by adding the material to the polymerisation emulsion, followed by a material which destroys the effect of the emulsifying agent or dispersing agent. Suitable fillers are glass fibres, asbestos wool, mineral wool, natural and synthetic fibres, mica, glass plates, talc, clay and calcium carbonate. The filler is preferably pre-coated with a coupling agent, such as silanes, e.g. j-aminopropyl-triethoxysilane and vinyl trichlorosilane.
