Abstract
1,266,500. Refining metal. BRITISH ALUMINIUM CO. Ltd. June 2, 1969 [May 31, 1968], No.26333/68. Heading C7D. Inclusions are removed from molten metal by flowing it through a multiplicity of flux-lined channels. Prior to this operation, the metal may be de-gassed by passing inert gas therethrough. As shown, molten Al or Al alloy enters chamber A of crucible 1 from launder 7 through flux cover 9 and is de-gassed by e.g. N 2 , Ar, CO or CO 2 which is supplied through tube 3 and emitted from porous plug 3a. The metal flows downwards through bed 5 of flux-coated Al 2 O 3 balls (the gaps between which providing the multiplicity of fluxlined channels) in which inclusions are removed, passes under baffle 2 and upwards through bed 6 of uncoated balls in chamber B in which intermetallic particles and residual flux are removed, and then flows out over pouring lip 1a to casting launder 8. In modifications, further beds of uncoated balls are provided, Figs.6 and 7 (not shown); and de-gassing is performed in a separate first vessel prior to treatment in a crucible containing flux-coated and uncoated balls, Figs. 8 (not shown). Instead of Al 2 O 3 , the beds may be made of granules of chromite, corundum, forsterite, magnesia spinel, MgF 2 , periclase, silicon carbide, or zircon. Suitable fluxes are based on KCl/NaCl or BaCl 2 possibly with additions of MgCl 2 , NaF or cryolite, or CaF 2 . Instead of using flux-coated balls to provide flux-lined channels, such channels may be obtained (a) by overlapping spaced flux-lined baffles, or (b) by using pads of coarse steel wool or turnings which have been dipped in liquid flux.
