Abstract
1,265,621. Sintering sulphide ores. BROKEN HILL ASSOCIATED SMELTERS PTY. Ltd. 17 Feb., 1970 [18 Feb., 1969], No. 7556/70. Heading C1A. A process for sintering sulphide ores, e.g. lead, zinc, comprises progressively igniting a substantially horizontal moving bed of charge material at the bottom thereof, passing air upwards through the bed in a first zone, discontinuing, or reducing the updraught in a second zone, and then further passing air through the bed in a third zone. In a modification of this process, gases may be drawn downwards through the bed whilst it traverses the second zone, and recycled to the first zone. The gas withdrawn from above the first zone, being relatively rich in SO 2 , may be passed to a sulphuric acid plant. The sintered material after leaving the third zone, optionally after passing through a further zone where there is no airdraught through the bed, may be fed to a breaker where it is crushed and screened, the oversize being used as feed to a blast furnace, and the undersize may be returned to the sinterbed feedstock. Other low-grade materials, e.g. plant residues, may be incorporated in the sinterbed feedstock.
