Abstract

1,265,366. Delaminating mica. REED INTERNATIONAL Ltd. 3 July, 1970 [13 May, 1969]. No. 24415/69. Heading C1A. Mica is delaminated by heating to partially remove combined water followed by treatment in a quenching bath and then in a treating bath, one of the baths being H 2 O 2 and the other being aqueous alkali. The heating may be at 700‹ to 850‹ C. The alkali may be an alkali metal hydroxide, an alkaline earth metal hydroxide, ammonium or substituted ammonium hydroxides. Muscovite or mica waste may be used as the starting material. The mica may be allowed to cool slightly, for instance to 600‹ C. before quenching. The mica may be drained between the two treatments. After treatment in the treating bath, the mica may be drained and washed and may then be mechanically agitated in water or other aqueous medium. Mica paper may be made from the product with the use of binders such as curable synthetic resins.
