Abstract

1,264,787. Stabilizing ships. TRADE & INDUSTRY, SECRETARY OF STATE FOR. 26 Feb., 1969 [28 Feb., 1968], No. 9682/68. Heading B7M. A passive roll ship stabilizer comprises an elongated tank 10 arranged symmetrically athwartships and normal to the vertical plane containing the roll-axis of the ship, the tank being partly filled with liquid which flows to and fro between the two end portions of the tank when the ship rolls. The tank has an internal restriction 22 which, in the central portion of the tank between the end portions, has at least one surface sloping in a direction transversely to the to and fro liquid flow thereby defining an upwardly widening flow passage. In the embodiment shown the restriction has two surfaces 32, 33 which slope towards each other in an upwards direction to ridge 34 to form an upwardly widening flow passage on each side of the restriction.
