Abstract
1,264,588. Measuring current in high voltage lines. TRANSFORMATEURS DE MESURE WALTER. March 10, 1970 [March 10, 1969], No. 11427/70. Headings G1A and G1U. [Also in Division G2] An optical system, especially for measuring current in high voltage lines, comprises a light bulb S whose light output passes through lens O1 to a semi-transparent mirror M which reflects the light along axis A. The light then passes through a first transparent element F1, e.g. a flint having a high Verdet constant, a second lens 02 and a second transparent element F2 similar to F1. The rear face of element F2 is metallized so the beam is reflected back along the axis to pass through semi-transparent mirror M, lens 05 to photodetector PD. In use element F2 is positioned in the magnetic field of the current being measured and element F1 is used to compensate for the rotation of the plane of polarization thus providing a measure of the current. The arrangement is such that the incoming light is focused by lens 02 on to the front surface 03 of element F2 and is reflected at the back face 04 through a coincident point P1, P2 on front face 03 into a focused point P3 on lens 05. This is stated to prevent the image S4 moving due to disturbances such as bending or vibration. In a practical embodiment the elements F1, F2 and lens 02 are housed in a rigid structure which may contain an inert gas, Fig. 2 (not shown).
