A cistern is provided with an external overflow which is connected back at the lower end either to the flush pipe or the sanitary appliance to be flushed. The overflow pipe may be gapped intermediate its ends, as in the embodiments of Figs. I and 4, a collector cup 6 being provided, which is connected to the flush pipe 3 either by an angled pipe 8, Fig. 1, or a straight pipe 14, Fig. 4, or may be directly connected thereto, Fig. 3 (not shown). The cup 6 overlaps the outlet pipe 4 in Fig. 1 to prevent pipe 4 rotating beyond the cup. Alternatively, a continuous pipe 19 may be provided between the cistern and the flush pipe 3, with an intermediate transparent portion 21 being provided, as in Fig. 6. In this embodiment using a concealed cistern, a collector cup could alternatively be used. The embodiment of Fig. 5 has a T-piece connection 15 with open vent pipe 17 (as in Fig. 6), with a continuous pipe 19, all or part of which is made of a transparent material, e.g. glass.
