[Also in Division F4] Solid or liquid passing down a perforated helical path, Fig. 4, through chambers separated by baffles J contacts liquid or gas flowing upwards in each chamber and passing through the perforations. The helical path may comprise overlapping radial strips, and the perforations may comprise the spaces between them. The upwardly flowing liquid or gas passes from the top of one chamber to the bottom of the next lowest chamber via pipes M. The apparatus may include means for vibrating it. The process carried out may be chemical or may comprise heat transference.
