Abstract

1,263,853. Protective arrangements for polyphase generating systems. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. 17 March, 1970 [29 April, 1969], No. 12715/70. Heading H2H. A polyphase power generating system comprises a generator having a plurality of polyphase winding sets each set having a separate neutral connection; a plurality of current responsive impedances by means of which each neutral connection is separately connected to earth and a plurality of sheathed bus sections having conductors connected to the winding sets and the sheaths connected to earth. A power generator 20 comprises two three-phase windings ABC; XYZ, electrically spaced by 60 degrees and having neutral connections N, M which are connected to earth by way of current responsive impedances 21, 22 in the form of transformers having secondary windings connected across resistors. The system further ineludes bus sections 23, 24, 25; each of which is provided with a sheath 23f connected to earth, and a pair of conductors 23a, 23b supported by standoff insulators 23c, 23d and separated by a dielectric shield 23e composed of two spaced insulating sheets. The conductors 23a, 23b in section 23 are connected to phases C and Z of the generator windings with similar connections for the sections 24, 25, thus the bus conductors in each section carry substantially antiphase currents. With a generating system so arranged, neutral to ground currents under fault conditions are limited by the impedances 21, 22 and line-to-line fault currents are reduced. The dielectric stresses in the sheaths are also reduced. In other embodiments the bus section conductors may be arranged coaxially or the bus sections may each only comprise one conductor in which case the conductor may be arranged to carry a reduced current by arranging the associated generator as a nine-phase machine.
