Abstract

1,263,687. Programmed control of machine tools. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Aug. 7, 1970 [Aug.22, 1969(2)], No.38261/70. Addition to 1, 217, 961. Heading G3N. The Specification is directed to a modification of the machine tool control system of Parent Specification whereby a further pulse rate modifier is used to adaptively control the spindle speed in dependence on sensed operating condition either in conjunction with the feedrate, or independently. The spindle speed can also be independently controlled to maintain a constant surface speed by compensating for changes in radius of the work. In a constant chip thickness mode the feedrate is controlled as a function of spindle speed so that as cutter torque increases with dulling of the tool or a tougher material is machined, the spindle speed and feedrate are changed simultaneously to maintain constant chip thickness.
