Abstract

1,263,141. Pelleting carbon black. COLUMBIAN CARBON CO. 13 Feb., 1969 [15 Feb., 1968], No. 7945/69. Heading B5A. [Also in Division C1] Carbon black particles, e.g. furnace black for compounding with rubber, is formed into pellets by spraying liquid, e.g. water, binder solutions, oil emulsion, or oils, from a rotatably adjustable tube 10 provided with a jet or jets 11 into particles which are simultaneously agitated and conveyed along a stationary cylindrical conduit 2, between a particle inlet 3 and a pellet outlet 4, by the action of members 8 extending either radially or at an inclination from a rotated shaft 5. The members 8 may either be helically staggered or located in the same radial planes along the shaft 5. The tube 10 is mounted for rotation, into a position wherein it is locked by a locking screw, whereby the jets 11 may direct the spray parallel to the radial plane of the shaft 5, or preferably at right angles thereto or at an intersecting angle within 45 degrees on either side of the perpendicular whereby the members 8 assist in distributing the liquid spray uniformly in a circumferential direction. The jets 11 extend longitudinally along the wall of one or more of the tubes 10 which project radially into the conduit 2. The tube 10 may comprise a series of circular jets 11, or a single or a series of slit type jets. A plurality of tubes 10 may be employed which extend to different depths into the conduit 2 and are circumferentially or longitudinally distributed therein. The particles may extend throughout the crosssection; or form an annular zone within the conduit 2. The jets are generally provided adjacent the particle inlet 3, but may in addition be provided further downstream. The discharged pellets are passed to a conventional pellet polisher and/or conventional dryer to remove excess liquid. Examples are given illustrating the higher mass strength, as determined by A.S.T.M. D1937-62T; and lower crush strength (as determined by the load required to crush 500 micron diameter pellets) obtained over the prior art processes.
