[Also in Division A5] A smoking agent for foodstuffs is produced by passing superheated steam through cellulosic particles, e.g. of wood, in a first reaction zone and passing the gaseous product to a second reaction zone in which it is maintained at a temperature permitting further reaction between its constituent components, oxygen, oxygen-rich air or an inert gas with an oxygen content greater than that of atmospheric air being supplied to at least one of the zones. The product may be used as produced in vapour form or condensed to a liquid before use.
