Abstract
126,286. Norton Co., (Assignees of Beecher, M. F.). April 29, 1918, [Convention date]. Plastic compositions containing alumina, silicon, carbide &c., and clay &c.-Non-slipping tiles or treads of decorative appearance are composed of a hard, dense, vitrified, ceramic body having incorporated therein granular particles of a hardness of 9 or more, e.g. fused alumina or silicon carbide. The body may be composed of ball clay alone or with the addition of substances such as feldspar, talc, steatite, whiting, flint, bone-ash, or Cornwall stone. A suitable composition comprises 35 parts by weight of ball clay, 25 of feldspar, and 40 of flint, two parts of such composition being mixed with one part of alumina and a suitable amount of water to form a mass which may be cast or moulded. After drying, the tile is burned at a temperature of about 1300‹ C. for about 100 hours, after which it is cooled slowly for a similar time. The temperature of burning is so controlled as to vitrify without melting or softening the material and to obtain a dense, compact, non-porous mass. The tile may be coloured and is preferably made in the form of a thin flat plate. Specification 126,285 is referred to. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 4355/00 and 12796/02, [both in Class 22, Cements &c.].
