A telecommunications system has centralized metering and call charge equipment which includes intermediate storage arrangements, the intermediate storage arrangements being additionally employed as buffer stores in data transmission between subscribers and centralized special service facilities. The special services provided are a means of registering orders in a so-called booking system where the orders are produced at one or more central locations as print-out forms, and a central information giving device. The metering and charge equipment comprises supervision of the outgoing junctions of a telephone system, call data being accumulated in intermediate stores during a connection and being transferred to a ticket printer when the connection is released. This equipment also supervises special service junctions in order to relay instructions from subscribers. To register an order in the booking system a subscriber dials a special code to gain connection to a special service junctor circuit which sends back a second dial tone. Digits corresponding to the order are dialled by the subscriber and these are buffered in the metering equipment intermediate stores. End of code dialling is signalled by actuation of an earth key by the subscriber and the special service circuit responds by a signal calling for authority to effect registration of the order as a print-out form. Authority is sent by a dialled code. If, however, the subscriber wishes to cancel he operates the earth key a second time and re-obtains the second dial tone. Second dial tone is also re-obtained following registration of an order should a second order be required. The information giving device may be accessed in a similar manner, the device having a selector to connect with any particular special service junctor in order to send as acoustic signals the information being sought.
