Abstract
1,262,640. Clutches; clutch/brake combinations; disc brakes; cooling. L. TAYLOR. 17 April, 1969 [18 April, 1968], No. 18375/68. Headings F2C, F2E and F2L. Cooling of a clutch/brake combination for a power press, is effected by scoops 50A rotating with the clutch or brake and directing air through passages 51, 52 to the friction elements of the clutch and/or brake. As shown, three scoops 50A rotate with a brake hub 40 fast with a driven clutch hub 17 splined on the press crank-shaft 16. The hub 17 is driven through friction plates 23A from a driving clutch member 23 bolted to a V-belt-driven flywheel 20. The clutch is engaged by an annular compressed-air-actuated piston 34 mounted in a cylinder 33 on the brake hub 40. Springs 42 withdraw the piston to release the clutch and apply the brake. The piston and hub 40 carry brake linings 41 which engage either side of a fixed annular disc 14 to apply the brake. The passages 51 extend axially through the hubs 40, 17 and passages 52 extend radially between the plates 23A and through the piston 34, linings 41, and disc 14. The disc carries cooling fins 14A, and may additionally be water-cooled, Fig. 6 (not shown). A self contained motorized fan unit 60 directs cooling air through a nozzle 61 on to the brake. Two or more brake discs may be provided.
