Abstract
1,262,408. X-ray tubes. WATKINSJOHNSON CO. 25 Aug., 1970 [2 Sept., 1969], No. 40822/70. Heading H1D. Ion bombardment of the emissive surface of the cathode of an X-ray tube is reduced by making the surface annular and providing an ion shield in its centre. In Fig. 1 the cathode comprises a nickel cup 46 coated round its rim 44 with an emissive alkaline earth oxide. The cathode is surrounded by a control electrode 49 in the form of an apertured diaphragm connected by three struts (not shown) to a central ion shield 54; the edges 56 and 57 of the control electrode and ion shield are preferably tapered at an angle of about 22À5 degrees and define an annular path for the beam 50. The control electrode 49 may be connected via a diode 59 to a variable bias source 58 and may be connected to a pulse generator 62 if pulse modulation of the beam is required.
