Abstract

1,261,706. Cutting with radiation beams. BRITISH OXYGEN CO. Ltd. 22 May, 1969 [31 May, 1968; 3 Dec., 1968; 10 April, 1969], Nos. 26247/68, 57300/68 and 18569/69. Headings B4B and B5A. A non-metallic workpiece 18 is cut by directing at a zone of the surface a radiation beam 4 of sufficient energy to effect fusion, thermal decomposition or vaporization, and concurrently directing a gas stream at the zone to modify by cooling, the action of the beam 4, the gas stream impinging on an area extending beyond that impinged on by the beam. Cooling by the gas produces a cleaner cut. Cutting apparatus includes means for focusing preferably a laser beam 4 from a continously operated CO 2 laser, and a device 8 for producing a gas stream preferably coaxial with the beam 4, comprising a gas inlet 12, a window 16 and an outlet 14. Synthetic plastics, paper, wood, glass, leather, mineral-based materials, and textiles &c. may be cut.
