Abstract

1,261,794. Wrapping articles and film material; endless conveyers; feeding sheets and webs. WELDOTRON CORP. 18 March, 1969 [10 April, 1968], No. 14224/69. Heading B8A, B8C and B8R. In a machine for wrapping a product 28 in sheet material, a length of material with its leading edge underneath the product 28 moving along a conveying path, is folded up behindover the top-down in front, and then under the leading end of the product to form a sleevelike wrapper around the package. The machine may also be provided with means for bending down side projecting edges of the sleeve and then sealing and heat-shrinking; or for applying another sleeve at right angles to the first. In an automatically operated machine, the web having a length corresponding to the length of the product 28 is either taken by selection from one of the trays 36, 38, 40, Fig..2 or it is cut from a roll 216, Fig. 5, in response to detection by switches 20, 22, 24, 26, Fig. 2, or by a photodetector 250, Fig. 5, of the length of the product 28. The product with the leading end of the web underneath the product trailing-portion is fed on an endless conveyer while the trailing end of the web is conveyed by a pair of endless chains 66, 68 so that when the product is transferred from the drive 56 to 80, the initially trailing end of the web is pulled under the product to over-lap the leading end whereafter the ends are heat sealed by a heater 86. To fold down projecting side portions of the sleeve, the sleeved product is passed on to another conveyer 90 having a pair of belts 108, 110 sloping downwardly and converging towards each other downstream so that as the product passes over the conveyer 90, the belts 108, 110 fold down the upper portion of the wrap. Two rollers 120, 132 then fold the wrapper down and under the product (Fig. 4, not shown). The package is then passed on to a next conveyer 150 where a heating plate 156 seals together the under folded portions of the wrapper with the bottom. The package may then be passed on to a heat-shrink tunnel.
