Abstract

1,261,566. Welding by pressure; shearing. KELSEY-HAYES CO. 8 Oct., 1969 [11 Oct., 1968; 19 June, 1969], No. 49398/69. Headings B3R and B3W. Apparatus for multiple upset butt welding of fine wires (e.g. 0À0025 to 0À005 inchs diameter) comprises a set of four dies arranged in pairs 22, 23 and 24, 25, the dies of each pair having at least first and second grooves (and, as shown, third grooves also) which when the dies of a pair are abutting define wire receiving cavities, 28, 29, 31, Fig. 9. In an initial position the dies are spaced laterally from each other by an extra distance sufficient to allow wires 211, 212 to be placed between the dies so as to extend between respective wire locating and holding means e.g. 223, 215, 218, 224 which lightly tension the wires and align them with the wire grooves in the dies. One pair of dies 24, 25 is then held in a lowered position relative to the other pair by means of a handle 327 so that the wires 211, 212 are aligned with the upper and middle wire grooves in the pair of dies 24, 25 and with the middle and lower grooves in the other pair. Next, movement of an operating handle 139 causes the dies of each pair to move laterally towards each other to an abutting position in which the wires are located in the cavities (being gripped in the middle cavities). Release of the handle 327 and operation of a cut-off lever 85 causes the die pair 24, 25 to be raised to its normal position thereby shearing the wires 211, 212 to provide two opposed cleanly sheared wire ends in the middle cavities. The scrap sheared ends may be pulled out of the other respective cavities as these are larger and do not grip the wires. Continued operation of the handle causes the dies to move outwardly to release the wires, then to return to a longitudinally retracted position, then to move inwardly to regrip the wires and then forwardly to cause upsetting of the projecting wire ends which thereby become partly welded. At this stage separate wire holding members bear on the wire so that as the dies again move outwardly to release the wire and then retract the partly formed weld is prevented from being torn apart. Further cycles of movement of the dies i.e. lateral movement to grip the wires, forward movement to the welding, wire-upsetting position, lateral releasing movement and retraction are carried out by continued use of the operating handle 139 to complete the multiple upset weld. Small relief areas 341, 342, Fig. 7, in the dies provide for the formation of weld upset during the welding process.
