[Also in Division G2] A device for enabling the driver of a vehicle to judge the distance to a preceding vehicle comprises' a set of pairs of marks or an adjustably spaced single pair of marks situated in the field of vision of the driver, the marks of each pair being spaced in dependence on the speed so that reference points on the preceding vehicle when viewed through the device, or the image thereof reflected in the windscreen, give an indication of the safe intervening distance. The marks may constitute a grid fixed on the windscreen, Fig. 3, arranged in pairs about a centre line 12; if thick marks are used variation in size of the preceding vehicle may be taken into account, small vehicles being aligned with the inner edges of the marks of each pair and large vehicles with the outer edges. The driver's height, or distance from the windscreen, may be taken into account by angling the marks, Fig. 11, a tall driver or a driver sitting back from the windscreen using the top of the marks and a small driver or one sitting close to the windscreen, the bottom. In other embodiments (Figs. 6, 7, and 14) (not shown), an illuminated grid of marks may be mounted on the, dashboard housing so that its reflection in the windscreen appears in the driver's field of vision; the grid may be moved vertically (Fig. 7) or horizontally (Fig. 14), toward or away from the windscreen to allow for the driver's height or closeness to the windscreen. In another embodiment, Fig. 12, a single pair of converging marks 45, are provided on an illuminated chart 46 which is dispensed below an opaque belt 42 having a transverse slot 44, the slot allowing an image of a portion of the marks to appear in the windscreen. The belt, and thus the slot, is moved in accordance with the vehicle speed by means of a drive 39 from the speedometer which turns a drum 40 over which the belt is drawn. The chart may be moved manually horizontally toward or away from. the windscreen to correct for drivers at different distances therefrom.
