Abstract
1,261,180. Continuous casting; casting processes. TSENTRALNY NAUCHNO-ISSLEDOVATELSKY INSTITUT CHERNOI METALLURGII IMENI I.P. BARDINA. 20 April, 1970, No. 18818/70. Heading B3F. [Also in Division C7] A flux for protecting the surface of metals during casting, particularly continuous casting, comprises by weight, 5-90% graphite, 5-30% cryolite, and 2-30% B compound such as B 2 O 5 or Na 2 B 4 O 2 . For casting high alloy low carbon steels the preferred composition is 5-15% graphite, 15-30% cryolite, 2-10% B compound, 25-40% Si-Ca, 5-15% NaNO 3 , 15- 30% mill scale, 5-15% silicate. The graphite acts as a lubricating agent and the B compound refines the grain.
