Abstract
1,260,861. Railway vehicle brakes. GIRLING Ltd. 24 Jan., 1969 [8 March, 1968], No. 11516/68. Heading F2E. A railway vehicle brake arrangement comprises disc and tread brakes arranged to act on the same wheel and a single actuator mechanically coupled directly to the disc brake and through the disc brake structure to the tread brake in such a manner that upon operation of the actuator the tread brake and then the disc brake are sequentially applied. Floating levers 17, 19 connected by a link 27 carry at one end disc pads and have pivot pins 16, 20 at their other ends guided in slot 18. A tread brake having a shoe 26 is coupled to lever 19 by a bellcrank 22 and levers 25, 21. The other floating lever 17 is coupled to the actuator via lever 15. On actuation the levers are moved upwards together and crank 22 rotates until the tread brake shoe 26 engages the wheel. Further upward movement of pin 16 causes lever 17 to pivot about link 27 until its pad is applied and the link 27 to move lever 19 up pivoting about pin 20 until its pad is applied. When all of the brakes are firmly engaged braking force can be applied, the forces applied by the disc brake being proportional to the thrust applied by the tread brake. The actuator 2 is coupled to link 15 and to a corresponding link of another brake arrangement on the other side of the vehicle through an automatic slack adjuster 7 having a body 8 which can abut a stop 9 adjustably mounted on a rod 10 fixed to the link 15. Drag members may support the brake shoe and maintain it in the off position, means for preventing vibration being provided.
