Abstract
1,260,851. Electrodes. JOSEPH LUCAS (INDUSTRIES) Ltd. 13 May, 1969 [21 May, 1968; 2 Aug., 1968], Nos. 24154/68 and 36973/68. Heading H1B. Gas electrodes are made by coating at least one side of a porous non-conductive substrate with a metal to form a film on the substrate, covering the film with coated particles inert to the electrolyte, each particle including a refractory material coated with a metal, and bonding the coated particles to each other and to the film. As described a clean porous P.V.C. sheet is plated with Ni, pasting the sheet with Ni-coated Al 2 O 3 particles and Ni-plating the sheet again to remove the oxide film on the particles so that the nickel coating cold welds to join the particles to each other and to the film. Pd is then electroplated on to the sheet to act as catalyst. In a modification the Ni-coated Al 2 O 3 particles are coated with Pd before being applied to the coated sheet with a PTFE emulsion to act as binder. The electrodes are useful in fuel cells and metal-air cells.
