Abstract

1,260,530. 4-benzyl-2-imidazolidinones. F. HOFFMANN-LA ROCHE & CO. A.G. 28 April, 1969 [1 May, 1968], No. 21524/69. Heading C2C. The invention comprises racemates and optical antipodes of compounds of formula wherein R is halogen, H, C 1-7 alkyl or C 1-7 alkoxy and R 2 , R 3 and R 4 are each H, OH or C 1-7 alkoxy, or any adjacent pair of R, R 2 , R 3 or R 4 is alkylenedioxy. The compounds where R is halogen are prepared by halogenation of those compounds where R is H. When R is other than halogen, the compounds are prepared from correspondingly substituted benzyl precursors as follows: (1) reacting the d-, l- or dl- O-alkyl- N - (1 - aminomethyl - 1 - benzyl)methylcarbamate with an alkali solution; (2) reacting the 1-benzylethylenediamine (II) with phosgene; or (3) reacting an N,N<SP>1</SP>-bis-carboalkoxy derivative of II with alcoholic alkali solution at elevated temperature. - Therapeutic compositions for oral or parenteral administration comprise compounds of the above formula, which lower blood pressure and cause vasodilation.
