Abstract

1,260,000. Soldering. FRY'S METALS Ltd. 11 Aug., 1970 [1 July, 1969], No. 33127/69. Heading B3R. In a method of soldering a lead 10 of a component, e.g. an integrated circuit component, to a pre-tinned conductor 11 on a printed circuit-board an electrically-heated tool is applied to the lead under low initial pressure and the pressure progressively increased, the heating current of the tool being switched on prior to, or at any rate at, the moment of contact of the tool with the lead. The tool 15 may be advanced by a two-speed pneumatic ram 14 with a fast down-stroke followed by a slow inching movement the pressure being applied to the leads through a helical spring which is gradually compressed. A jet of air X may be blown on the work during a cooling period in which the tool remains applied under pressure to the work. The tool may bond a plurality of leads simultaneously to corresponding conductors on the printed circuitboard.
