Abstract

1,259,945. Methanol. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 4 Sept., 1969 [16 Sept., 1968], No. 43889/68. Heading C2C. A methanol production process includes a first synthesis stage, in which a mixture of H 2 with CO or CO 2 or both is circulated through a system including a copper-containing methanol synthesis catalyst and methanol recovery means and a purge of circulating gas is withdrawn, and a second synthesis stage in which said purge gas is passed through a system containing a copper-containing methanol synthesis catalyst and methanol recovery means. The second system is preferably also a circulatory system. More than two systems may be used. Preferably the methanol is recovered from the first stage by cooling and from later stages by liquid scrubbing. The pressure in the first stage is preferably not greater than 5 times the synthesis gas generation pressure. Pressures and temperatures may be increased in successive synthesis stages.
