In an x-ray analyzer for investigating minerals in situ and including a transducer probe 5 which contains a radioisotope source 8 and a scintillation or proportional counter 9, output pulses from the counter are supplied to a pulse height analyzer 2 which includes an analyzing-and-computing channel 21 having two differential discriminators 24, 25 one of which is turned to a pulse energy corresponding to the secondary emission photo-peak of the element being determined, while the other monitors a region in the scattered radiation spectrum, the ratio of these two counts being indicated on a meter 28. In this way the weight per cent in the mineral of the element being investigated is determined, the count taken by the second discriminator in a region of the scattered radiation spectrum serving as an internal standard. The background count caused by radiation direct from the source 8 is determined by removing the probe from the bore-hole and adjusting each unit 26, 27 to give a pull output in response to radiation from the source only. A further channel 22 may be providing for determining a further element simultaneously. To prevent drift of the detector a feedback loop 23 is provided which includes a discriminator 36 turned to a spectral region outside the range being investigated, this energy range being provided by a second isotope source, if necessary. The pulse count rate recorded by meter 37 controls detector voltage source 38 in such a way as to maintain this count rate constant. A source 45 of pulses of known intensity and frequency is provided for checking the channels 21, 22, 23. The analyzer is used to monitor the composition of the mineral surrounding a bore hole, and by being moved through the hole provides a continuous record of the lead and barium composition, for example, of the mineral.
