[Also in Division C5] The invention comprises polyphenylene ethers in which at least some of the benzene nuclei carry one or more polynitrogen groups containing at least one amino nitrogen atom and at least some of the benzene nuclei carry one or more alkyl groups. As well as being linked by oxygen atoms some of the benzene nuclei may be linked by direct bonds or by sulphur atoms or sulphone, sulphoxide, carbonyl, amine or alkylene groups. The polymers may be prepared by oxidative coupling of phenols at least some of which already contain the required substituents, or by oxidative coupling of phenols, at least some containing alkyl groups but none the polynitrogen groups, and then after-treating the polymers to introduce the polynitrogen groups. In examples polymers prepared from 2,6-dimethylphenol, 2-methyl-6-hexadecyl-phenol and 2- methyl-6-alkyl-phenol are reacted with maleic anhydride and then with N,N-dimethyl-1,3- diaminopropane and with tetraethylenepentamine; a polymer prepared from 2,6-dimethylphenol, 2-methyl-6-hexadecylphenol and 2- methyl - 6 - (1 - methyl - 9 - butoxycarbonylnonyl) phenol is reacted with N,N-dimethyl- 1,3-diaminopropane; polymers prepared from 2,6-dimethylphenol and 2-methyl-6-hexadecylphenol are reacted with SO 2 Cl 2 and then with tetraethylenepentamine, directly with tetraethylenepentamine, and with maleic anhydride and then with tetraethylenepentamine ; a polymer prepared from 2,6-dimethylphenol, 2- methyl-6-hexadecylphenol and 2,6-dimethyl-4- butoxy-carboxylphenol is reacted with N,N- dimethylpropane-1,3-diamine; and a polymer prepared from 2-methyl-6-octylphenol is reacted with tetraethylene pentamine.
