Abstract

1,258,185. Diapers. KIMBERLY CLARK CORP. 7 March, 1969 [22 March, 1968], No. 12278/69. Heading A3V. A disposable diaper has a substantially rectangular absorbent core 11 with a fluid pervious cover sheet 12 and a fluid impervious backing sheet 13, the longitudinal edge portions 13a of the backing sheet being folded over the core and being attached to the cover sheet along its entire length in a region substantially coextensive with the side edges of the core, each of the ends of the backing and cover sheets having a flexible plastics strip 14 between them and bonded to them along a line 16 adjacent the core ends, the inner edge 14a of the plastics strip extending inwardly along the core. The folded over longitudinal edge portions 13a may be attached to the cover sheet 12 adhesively or by heat sealing. The plastics strips 14, when bonded to the cover and backing sheets as by heat sealing, form fluid retaining products at the diaper ends. The absorbent core 11 may be formed of cellulose fluff from wood pulp, multiple layers of cellulose wadding, cotton or rayon fibres, or a combination of these materials. The cover sheet 12 may be formed of hydrophobic or hydrophilic components and may comprise cellulose wadding or non-woven webs, which may be thread-reinforced, of natural or synthetic fibres. The backing sheet 13 may be of polyethylene, polypropylene or P.V.C. and may be pigmented and taffeta embossed. The plastics strips 14 may be of clear propylene up to 1 mil thick. When manufacturing the diapers, double width plastics strips overlie the ends of two adjacent absorbent cores under a continuous cover sheet and they are then cut, the two halves being used for adjacent diapers. The finished diaper may have adhesive tabs or pins at one end for fastening purposes.
