Abstract
1,258,179. Graft polymer compositions. TORAY INDUSTRIES Inc. 19 Dec., 1969 [27 Dec., 1968], No. 62136/69. Heading C3G. A composition comprises (I) a copolymer of a monomer comprising at least 50% by weight of styrene and/or methyl methacrylate with a rubbery copolymer of an alpha-olefin having side chains containing CH 2 = CHCOO- and/or CH 2 = C(CH 3 )COO- groups and (II) a polymer containing at least 50% by weight of butene and/or isobutylene, liquid paraffin or 1,2-polybutadiene. The composition may be prepared by grafting the monomer on to the rubbery copolymer, e.g. an ethylene-vinyl ester or ethylenevinyl ester-vinyl alcohol copolymer into which CH 2 = CHCOO- or CH 2 = C(CH 3 )COO- groups have been introduced by an ester interchange or esterification reaction, component (II) being added before, during or after the graft polymerization. Examples are given in which an ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer activated with methyl methacrylate is grafted with styrene and acrylonitrile by a bulk/suspension process, polybutene, polybutadiene or liquid paraffin being incorporated during the bulk polymerization stage, or polybutene, or a mixture thereof with liquid paraffin, being incorporated during the suspension stage.
