Abstract

In a tunnel furnace having horizontal heating elements 16 resting on the tops of ceramic heating tiles 4 forming the ceiling of the furnace, the tiles 4 are supported conventionally by their longitudinal side edges which rest on the side walls of the furnace and additionally by their transverse side edges 9, 10 which rest on transverse bridge members 13 which span the side walls. The bridge members 13 are T-shaped and the transverse edges 9, 10 of the tiles 4 are joggled so that the undersurfaces of the tiles 4 and bridge members 13 are coplanar. The elements 16 which are double hairpin molybdenum disilicide members rest on grains 16 of high clay content carried by the tiles to allow for relative movement of the elements and tiles due to differential thermal expansion.
