Abstract
1,255,623. Positive clutch. HORDERN MASON & EDWARDS Ltd. 5 March, 1969 [17 Jan., 1968], No. 2454/68. Heading F2C. A positive clutch, e.g. for a slow-running power press or a guillotine, comprises clutch teeth 19, 16 on a driven sleeve 17 and a driving flywheel 11, respectively, and the sleeve 17 is splined to a driven shaft 10 and carries a ring 22 screw threaded thereon, a spring loaded stop 31 being moved to engage one of a number, e.g. four, of recesses 23 in the ring 22 to prevent rotation thereof and hence move the sleeve 17 axially to disengage the clutch. With the ring held against rotation, the ring and sleeve 17 move relatively -in opposite axial directions against spring-loaded thrust pads 26, 36 which brake the driven member frictionally and eventually positively stop the driven sleeve when their springs are fully compressed. On again withdrawing the stop 31, a tension spring 24 between the sleeve 17 and ring 22 turns the sleeve 17 and , assisted by a helical spring 30, moves the sleeve axially to engage the clutch. A small relative turn -between the sleeve and nut, e.g. 30 degrees, may be sufficient to move the sleeve axially from its engaged position to-a disengaged position.
