[Also in Division B8] In a power-driven combination can opener and knife-sharpener a can is gripped between a traction-wheel 17 for rotating the can anda cutting wheel 18, a permanent magnet 24 retaining the severed can lid. The cutting wheel 18 and magnet 24 can be raised by a lever 20. The traction wheel 17 is driven through reduction gearing 28 from a worm 35 on the armature shaft 31 of an electric motor 27, the worm 35 also driving reduction gearing for an abrasive wheel 50. The wheel 50 is mounted on a sleeve 59 and hollow shaft 56, and axial displacement prevented by a friction retainer 60. The wheel 50 is coupled to the stub shaft 57 through the action of a spring 62 attached to washers 63; the coupling can slip under load. A stub shaft 57 supports the internally tapered hollow shaft 56, one end of the taper journaling the stub shaft and the other carrying a sleeve bearing 58; the hollow shaft 56 bears on a thrust bearing 72 mounted in a plastics housing 13. Knife and scissor slots 65, 66 are provided in the housing 13; Can opening and knife sharpening compartments are provided by a fire-retardant, channel-shaped fibre wall 54 (see also Fig. 4, not reproduced). Debris from a knifesharpening operation is prevented from entering the other compartment by an annular rim 56b and fins 56c-on the hollow shaft 56, and by a stream of air from a cooling fan 45 through an aperture 55 of the fibre wall 54.
