Abstract

1,255,175. Thermal switches. OTTER CONTROLS Ltd., and J. C. TAYLOR. 2 May, 1969 [15 May, 1968], No. 23158/68. Heading H1N. [Also in Division G1] In a thermal switch a snap-acting bimetal strip 1, Fig. 1, cut to form a central tongue 2 between inwardly strained legs 3 is welded, brazed or soldered to rods 12, 13 embedded or force-fitting at splines into a mounting block 8. One of the rods 12, 13 may form a terminal connection 14 if the tongue 2 carries a contact 6, additional rods 17, 19 forming fixed contacts or backing stops. In modifications a heating current may be passed through the strip 1 between the rods 12, 13 and the deformed section 5 between the legs 3 may be omitted. The tongue 2 may also actuate a separate spring contact (not shown) through a push rod, the rods 12, 13 may be bent up so that they form the arms of a single U-shaped rod. The strip being attached either to the ends of the rod or to the two bent regions of the U shape, the ends forming the terminals.
