Abstract
1,254,754. Tufting machines. UNIVERSAL TUFTING MACHINERY (LANCS.) Ltd. 19 June, 1970 [17 June, 1969], No. 30599/69. Heading D1G. In a patterning device for producing high and low pile a pair of yarn feed rollers 8, 9 are coupled to rotate together (by gears 31, 32), the roller drive being selectively through a first gear train to one roller or through a second gear train, which causes a different rate of rotation to the first gear train, to the other roller. As shown a plurality of pairs of rollers 8, 9 are disposed in vertical columns, the rollers of each column being driven through a train of gears from either a shaft 14 or a shaft 15, which shafts 14 and 15 are driven at different rates through chains 23 and 24 from a worm drive unit 17. The gears 28a (28b) of the gear trains are rotatable on shafts 29 of the rollers 8 (9) and are each coupled by splines 37 to a disc 36 which, on energisation of an electromagnet 33, engages a clutch member 38 secured to the shaft 29 and hence rotates the yarn feed roller 8 (9). Engergisation of the clutches may be controlled by a device scanning a pattern member.
