Abstract
1,254,095. Rivets. ENGELHARD MINERALS & CHEMICALS CORP. 3 June, 1970 [4 June, 1969], No. 26899/70. Heading F2H. [Also in Division H1] A rivet which acts as an electrical contact comprises a metallic head 1 and shank 2, the shank and that portion of the head adjacent the shank being coated with a layer of solder 8 having a lower melting point than the metal of the head and shank, the layer of solder having a thickness of from 0À0002 to 0À005 inches. The head 1 is preferably formed from a layer 3 of contact metal e.g. silver or a silver alloy, bonded to a backing metal 4 e.g. copper, bronze, brass, nickel or steel, from which the shank 2 may also be manufactured. An electrical contact assembly (Fig. 2, not shown) may be formed by riveting the rivet to a metallic arm (9), and heating the assembly so that the solder forms a joint between the rivet and the arm.
