A surface grinding machine for use with peripheral grinding wheels 31, 31a has two grinding carriages 19, each of which is adapted to support a respective peripheral grinding wheel such that the axes of the wheels are mutually perpendicular and each of which is movable in two mutually perpendicular directions for feeding, in operation, a grinding wheel mounted thereon, in a first direction axially of the grinding wheel and in a second direction perpendicular to the first direction. As described the carriages 19 are slidable vertically in guideways provided in respective slide members 18 which are slidably mounted for horizontal movement with respective guideways 15a in support members 15 and 21. The workpieces are supported on an inclined surface portion of a longitudinally reciprocable table 2 having dressing devices 20 adjacent one end. In one method of operation the wheels 31, 31a are dressed by devices 20 and the workpiece placed on the table 2. A pass of the table 2 is effected and automatic redressing occurs before the return pass is made. In a second method, the wheels are withdrawn, the workpiece positioned on the table 2 and the table reciprocated'whilst the wheels are advanced by hand wheels 7 until sparking occurs. The wheels are subsequently advanced intermittently at the end of each double pass of the table 2 by a pawl-and-ratchet mechanism until the hand wheels 7 indicate a preset size on a scale and cause a cam switch to be operated. The wheels are then dressed, a double pass effected, a second dressing performed and a single fine-dressing pass made.
