Abstract

1,253,268. Thermionic cathode tubes. SIEMENS A.G. 11 Feb., 1969 [12 Feb., 1968], No. 7301/69. Heading H1D. A grid-controlled transmitter tube comprises a hollow anode cylinder 5 surrounding a central hollow cylinder 1 having a number of radiallydirected, axially-extending ribs 2 to form a focusing electrode for a number of strip-like cathode elements 6, one cathode element 6 being positioned in the space 3 between each adjacent pair of ribs so as to form separate flat electron beams 10 focused and directed radially out towards the anode 5 between gaps in a cagelike control grid assembly 7 and a cage-like screen grid assembly 8, both the assemblies 7, 8 being formed of axially extending elongate members. As shown, the control grid members 7 are arcuate in cross-section, and the screen grid members 8 have U-shaped cross-sections with the concave surface directed inwardly and the limbs of the U-shape being longer than the base to form extended drift spaces 9. The cathode elements 6 may consist of directly heated shaped-thoriated tungsten sheets each being individually tensioned longitudinally by a spring, Fig. 2 (not shown). The control grid assembly may be tensioned by a common spring. A duct 4 in the central cylinder 1 may be employed for cooling. Also, for some applications the individual electron beams may be focused by a magnetic field running in the direction of the beams.
