Abstract
1,252,374. Can openers. METAL BOX CO. Ltd. 9 Sept., 1970 [1 Oct., 1969], No. 48347/69. Addition to 1,175,575. Heading B8D. In a can opener of the type described and claimed in the parent Specification, the cutter wheel 8 is provided with a buttress surface 40 to limit can end seam penetration by the cutter wheel edge to the outer layer 5 of the seam. As shown, the buttress surface is formed on an integral cutter portion. In a modification, Fig. 4 (not shown), the buttress surface is on member 4 superimposed on the cutter wheel. In a further modification, Fig. 5 (not shown), the buttress surface is disposed below the cutter wheel edge. A further projection which is constituted by a cutter wheel projection 42, a washer below the cutter wheel (Fig. 4), or an extension 15b of the housing abutment 15a, Fig. 1 (not shown), closely underlies the can end seam during the cutting operation and engages the same at completion of the cutting operation to prevent inadvertent can body/ can end separation.
