A biopsy needle assembly comprises a hollow flexible needle 11 having open front and rear ends and a cutting edge at its front end, a stylet 18 having a closed front end and means to releasably position the stylet within the needle, in which the stylet and needle have uniform circular cross-sections for a major portion of their lengths and inwardly tapering front ends. The means comprises a member 15 with a notch 17 on the needle, in which a pin 22 on the stylet may be located. The needle has an oblique cutting edge and may have two diametrically opposed teeth (Fig. 4, not shown) and the exterior of the front end of the needle has a rasp-like surface 12b. In a further embodiment, Fig. IA (not shown) the needle and stylet are coaxially surrounded by a flexible sheath the back end of which may be inserted into a syringe and upon which a guard is releasably mounted. A microcauter and cryoprobe are described for insertion into the sheath when the needle and stylet are removed. In another embodiment (Fig. 4A, not shown), the stylet may have a shank (39) with a tip (40) for penetrating tissue. Alternatively (Fig. 1A, not shown) the tip may be in the form of an auger for penetrating hard tissue. A probe (Fig. 5A, not shown) is provided for removing material from the needle after a biopsy.
