Abstract
1,251,341. Cable joints and terminations. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 3 Feb., 1969 [2 Feb., 1968], No. 5479/68. Heading H2E. A cable joint or termination comprises a preformed closed container filled with an insulating gas such as sulphur hexafluoride. As shown, applied to a stop-feed joint for an oil-filled cable, the annular closed container 28 is formed of a tubular shell 34<SP>1</SP>, of aluminium, copper or stainless steel, and an inner wall 32 of glass fibre filled epoxy resin. The container provides the main insulation for the joint. The inner surface of the shell 34<SP>1</SP> and the surface of a stress ring 48<SP>1</SP> connected to the conductor are coated with polyvinyl chloride, polyethylene or polymethylacrylate. Each cable carries a wrapping 54 of semi-conductive paper and a silica-filled epoxy resin stress cone 64, with a metallized surface 66 connected to the cable sheath 76 by a wrapping of wire 58. A casing 74<SP>1</SP> with an oil filling inlet 116 connects the container 28 to the cable sheath. Each stranded conductor 2 is crimped in a ferrule 10 formed integrally with a connector 8. The oil duct 4 in the cable connects with a transverse passage 20 initially closed by a valve member 92 held at the upper end of the passage by a magnet. After evacuation of the cable oil entering through the space 70 displaces the valve and flows into the cable.
