Abstract
1,250,969. Granulating metals. ALLOY METALS Inc. Dec.18, 1969, No.61809/69. Heading C7X. Metal powder is produced by providing a downwardly directed swirling gas stream 70 by introducing gas under pressure tangentially into an annular gas chamber 58 surrounding a nozzle 56 through which molten metal flows, the pressure at the vortex of the gas stream being greater than at the periphery thereof, and the velocity of the gas at the vortex being substantially zero, and introducing molten metal into the gas stream near the periphery thereof (arrows 78) so as to atomize the metal and permit its collection as a dry powder. The gas used may be an inert or non-oxidizing gas, and the formed powder may be suspended and collected by a reciprocating conveyor, preferably under a protective inert gas blanket.
