Abstract
1,250,491. Deflecting propulsion jets. ROLLS-ROYCE Ltd. 12 Dec., 1968 [15 Dec., 1967], No. 57006/67. Heading B7G. A thrust producing means e.g. a rocket motor, comprises a tubular housing 1 with curved bearing blocks 2 and 2<SP>1</SP> providing a seating for a complementary surface on an orientable nozzle 3. During operation of the rocket a cooling fluid is circulated through an annular cavity 5, adjacent the bearing surface, and fed by pipes 6 and 7. An annular seal 4 extends around the bearing surface at the downstream end thereof. An annular driving ring 8 rotatable by gear teeth 10 engages an arm 11 on nozzle 3, for rotating the nozzle about the housing's axis, and the ring 8 also carries an actuator 12 to tilt the nozzle. Alternatively, universal swivelling can be achieved by two double acting actuators connected to the nozzle 3 at 90 degrees with respect to each other. A liquid mono-propellant can be supplied from a tank 15 to a gas generator 17, Fig. 2, which provides pressure to operate pistons 25, 26 in tanks 20, 21, containing propellants to be supplied to the combustion chamber of the rocket; the liquid monopropellant can also be supplied through pipes 6 and 7 to cavity 5 and to control valve 32, so as to effect cooling of the bearing surface, and, controlling of the actuators 12 respectively. Alternatively, pressure gas from the pressure gas generator 17, or the propellant from tanks 20, 21 can be led through pipes to achieve cooling and control.
