Abstract

1,249,794. Collapsible steering columns. DAIMLER-BENZ A.G. 22 Jan., 1970 [23 Jan., 1969], No. 3139/70. Addition to 1,249,380. Heading B7H. A vehicle as claimed in any of claims 1-5 of the parent Specification, in which the steering wheel 1 can move about an axis 5 extending transversely of the vehicle under abnormal force applied to the wheel, includes a plastically deformable member surrounding the lower end of a spindle 2. As shown, the deformable member may be a corrugated tube 7 closed at its lower end by a plate 8 against which spindle 2 can press, when said face is applied, to extend the tube 7, whereby energy is absorbed. In another embodiment (Fig. 2, not shown), the deformable member is in the form of a stepform part (10) to an end portion (11) of which spindle (2) is attached by means of a ball (12). In both embodiments another deformable member 3 may be provided at the upper end of the steering column.
