Abstract
1,249,688. Heavy current switches; contactmembers for switches. BURNDY CORP. 13 March, 1969 [18 March, 1968], No. 13210/69. Heading H1N. A heavy current switch for shorting electrolytic cells has movable main contacts 18 mounted on a flexible conductive cantilever arm 14 and an arcing contact 24 mounted on an extension arm 22 carried by arm 14, the switch being operated by a lever assembly 32 acting on the free end 16 of arm 14 through springs 68 and on the extension arm 22 through spring 64 so that the arcing contacts 24, 26, engage before the main contacts 18, 20, close and separate after the main contacts open, (see also Figs. 5-7, not shown). Cantilever arm 14 comprises two oppositely bowed straps of laminated construction. A shaft 44 is rotated counter-clockwise manually to open the switch or switches, one or more lever assemblies 32 each converting the limited rotary motion of shaft 44 into limited rectilinear sliding motion of a drive rod 50 coupled via a J-bar link 48 to an eccentric arm 46 mounted on shaft 44. Rod 50 is coupled to a header member 60 by a coupling bolt 62, and the force transmitting springs 64, 68, are captured between header 60 and arms 22, 14. Stationary arcing contact 26 is screwed into its conductor plate 12 for easy replacement. Arcing contact 24 and arm 22 are replaced by disassembly of bolt 62 from rod 50. Arm 22 slides along bolt 62 to give a limited pivotal motion relative to free end 16 of arm 14 and ensure contact wiping upon switch closing. A pin 66 captured in free end 16 fits loosely within an aperture 68 of arm 22 to prevent parallel relative motion of arm 22 and free end 16.
