1,249,105. Coated iron and steel. LACKUND DRUCKFARBENFABRIK COSWIG VEB. 16 Sept., 1968 [19 Sept., 1967], No. 42654/67. Heading B2E. [Also in Division C3] Iron and steel are coated with a passivating agent A comprising by weight: (a) 1-99% of polymer(s) P with repeating unit: (b) 99-1% of M complex organic compound(s) or carboxylic acid salt(s) of Pb, Mn, Co, or Fe, dissolved or suspended in an organic solvent; (c) 0-20% of a polymer Q with repeating unit R 4 -CO-R 5 in an open chain or as part of a ring system. In P, X is a hetero-atom or an unsaturated or aromatic gp; one of R 1 , R 2 , and R 3 is a divalent gp incorporated in the polymer chain, the other two being organic radicals which may be cyclic but not phenolic; or one can be H. In Q, canbonyl oxygen content <10%, R 4 is part of a polymer molecule, and R 5 is an organic radical inside or outside the polymer chain. A may also contain a pigment, colouring agent, other inactive material, and/or a diluent. A may be stabilized by 0.01-0.1% of a radical receptor, e.g. hydroquinone. A may be applied as an air-drying coating or incorporated in a stoving lacquer. Polymer P may be epoxy resin, polyvinyl isobutyl ether, a hydrocarbon copolymer, etherified melamineformaldehyde resin, or urethane oils. M may be a phthalocyamine complex. Q may be a drying oil, fatty alkyd resin, ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer, or a polymer with nitrile groups. On top of the coating of A may be applied a conventional coating agent, e.g. based on oil, alkyd, resins, or nitrocellulose.
