Abstract

1,249,035. Buoys. ELLIOTT BROS. (LONDON) Ltd. 9 Feb., 1970 [10 Jan., 1969], No. 1538/69. Heading B7A. [Also in Division G1] Water surface excursions are measured by supporting on a buoy a number of probes 3 which are arranged to be partially immersed in the water, a damping board 5 being provided on the buoy and being arranged at a depth below the surface such that the buoy follows vertical excursions of relatively long wavelength waves to thereby maintain partial immersion of the probes but not vertical excursions of relatively short wavelength waves. In this manner small waves superposed on large waves may be detected and measured. The probes may be resistors or capacitors and may be arranged in a two- or three-dimensional array. A housing 1 contains electronic equipment (including a local oscillator, filters and head amplifiers) and instruments for measuring the orientation and motion of the buoy (including vertical accelerometer, pitch/ roll sensors, and electronic compass sensor). Data may be transmitted to a recording station by cable or radio.
